Calendar
Sow
April – May, directly outdoors once frost risk is over. For earlier blooms, sow indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost (March-April).
Plant out
Transplant seedlings after the last frost, hardening them off gradually. Space according to variety.
Harvest
June – October, pick flowers as they open. Deadhead regularly to encourage more blooms.
Conditions
Sun
Full sun, at least 6-8 hours a day, for best flowering.
Water
Water regularly, especially during dry periods, keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged. Allow soil to dry slightly between waterings.
Soil
Well-draining, moderately fertile soil. Prefers a neutral to slightly acidic pH (6.0-7.0).
Spacing
French marigolds: 15-20cm; African marigolds: 25-45cm, depending on variety.
Containers
Excellent in pots, window boxes, and borders. Dwarf varieties are particularly good for containers.
Indoors
Can be grown indoors from seed to get a head start, or as temporary houseplants in bright light.
Care and harvest
Feeding
Generally not required in good soil. A light, balanced liquid feed once a month can boost flowering in containers.
Pruning
Deadhead spent flowers regularly to encourage continuous blooming and prevent self-seeding.
Harvesting
Snip flowers at the base of the stem when fully open. Pick regularly.
Storage
Best used fresh as cut flowers. Can be dried for potpourri or crafts by hanging upside down.
Good companions: Tomatoes, Potatoes, Roses, Asparagus
